How MtF Mentors Was Born
Nov 03, 2008

When I first seriously began thinking about transitioning, and actually decided to DO something about it, I spent months [years?] researching everything I could find on the Internet regarding transitioning and transgender people.

While I did wade through mountains of information and some really far-fetched stories, I also felt hindered by the lack of someone online with whom to connect 24/7--who could relate on a personal level with my schedule and communicate with me about this very major step in my life. I did manage to find a few local transgendered people through various online groups, but my experiences in trying to establish some sort of friendship with them were disappointing.

What I needed to find was a person who was willing to BE THERE for me and with me as I started my new life. A friend who I could email, call, or hang out with who was willing to answer my mile-long list of questions, who would listen to my trepidations, fears and anxieties as well as my excitement, discoveries and enlightenments about myself along the way.

I began Hormone Therapy as an experiment; was part of an implant study with a dear friend I met at a local support group.  I thought we had found the ultimate 'fasttrack'.  We were both VERY new to this [transgender] experience and as exciting as it seemed, it would have been all the more rewarding if I could have shared it with community; because as I discovered, my road was to be much more complicated than my "sister's".  As her initial biological changes became evident, mine never happened.  I needed help!  I was devastated and sought advice.  Was there anyone out there?  I would have given anything to have discussed this and shared with another transgender person who knew the excitement and the concerns.  I longed for someone who had been through it, or was going through it, that I could talk to, cry with, and likewise share everything as it happened.

As I approach living full-time as a transgender person, I have made it a point of finding others who are early in their transitions, from those who haven't yet started hormones, to those already in transition. I want to give them the support and the friendship that I didn't have.

The rewards of being there for them are profound - the excitement of seeing them smile and laugh and learn doesn't even have enough words to describe it.

There are so many pre- and early-transitioning people out there. I have created this website in the hopes that transgender people everywhere, in the U.S. and abroad, will be able to connect with local transgenders in their own cities and be able to have the support and friendship that we all desire.

And for the transgender people who have already been through it, or are further along in their transitions, this website will give you the opportunity to share your knowledge with those who aren't quite as far along as you....

I hope this site becomes an invaluable resource for you and those you hold dear. If you have any suggestions for this website, please use the Feedback link at the bottom of any of the pages and let me know. Thank you for visiting!
